Role of LUCK in your investment Success

Greetings from Hitesh! We have dealt with all the areas related to investments so far. The one which was not attended was LUCK. Let us deal with that today.

Have you seen – Someone – doing some improbable and uncertain trade and outcome comes in his favour. We must understand that this is role of luck and not SKILL.

Western thinkers have some belittling feeling with word LUCK. So, Nassim Taleb calls it RANDOMNESS. Some other calls it CHANCE. Whichever name they use it – they all are talking about luck.

How do we decide Success of any given investment decision?

All normal guys see the results and if the resutls are in favour they call, their decision was right and if the resutls are not in favour, they call it decision was wrong.

The most successful guys have a different way. They decide their decision was right or wrong in the moment of making decision.

That’s why BUFFETT says – “I am not right because market agrees with me and I am not wrong because market disagree with me. I am right because my logic and my information & analyses says so.”

All he says is when you make decision – all your logic, information should support that investment decision. If they are not supporting – you are relying on Luck. Between decision making (after due study) and outcome there can be many events which may happen and that events will add to the outcome. So, Buffett and other smart guys see the track record or resutls considering Skills and Luck.

How NORMAL minds use wrong words as per TALEB?

Normal minds are not able to differentiate the resutls are due to luck or skills. They want to look genius and successful. So, they use wrong words as follows…

They use SKILL for LUCK / determination for randomness / certainty for probability / knowledge for belief / reality for theory / law for coincidence and the best is Skilled investors with Lucky idiot.

Normal minds say – if it is written in their LUCK, they will get it. Because they don’t want to work on other 4 factors, so LUCK remains only factor for them and so, luck plays 100% role for them.

The fact is LUCK has just 20% role and there are other 4 factors (80%) which, if you control, you can, not only reduce the negative effects of luck, but transcend beyond luck.

I have always maintained that there is NO MARKET outside. It’s inside your mind only. Your inside purity, your subtle motives and your goals will get reflected in quality of your decisions and quality of your life.
