Buddha’s Middle Path V/s.
Normal Investors
Greetings
from Hitesh! Lord Buddha was famous for advocating middle path in life. Today
we will see the difference between what he actually meant by middle path and how
our financial planners and middle classe interpreted. Let me share his famous
story.
Buddha’s
talk with Prince Shrown:-
Buddha went to Shrown one night and asked him, “Shrown, I
have heard that when you were a prince, before initiation, you used to
play on a Veena, a sitar, and you were a great musician. So I
have come to ask you one question. If the strings of the veena are
very loose, what happens?”
Shrown said, “If the strings are very loose, then no
music is possible.”
And then Buddha said, “And if the strings are very tight,
too tight, then what happens?” Shrown said, “then too music cannot be produced.
The strings must be in the middle – neither loose nor tight, but just exactly
in the middle.”
Shrown said, “It is easy to play the veena, but
only a master can set these strings right, in the middle.” So Buddha
said, “This much I have to say to you, after observing you for
the last six months – that in life also the music comes only when the strings
are neither loose nor tight, but just in the middle.”
This
has been the famous example quoted by many in the past.
Our
Interpretations:-
By
middle path, Buddha did not mean to live a life of meritocracy. He himself was
an extremist……from a king, he went onto become a sanyasi. He and his sanyasis used
to live on donations.
What he meant that you chose the path with lot of considerations and passion…….give
your everything for that path……be ready to risk your last shirt……but when you
do that keep your common sense intact!!
Let
me deal with this aspect with little details:-
When
Buddha went in search for a truth, he met a guru. He asked him to eat one time.
Buddha was with him for 6 months….he did not get the results….so, he went to
other guru.
2nd
one said to eat only rice….he did that for another 6 months….went to 3rd
one….he said you only eat 1 piece of rice a day….Buddha did that. He kept on
trying different guru, till he became his own master!!
If you study the above facts in details……he had an open mind and
surrendered heart when he went to any guru. He was 100% obedient…..but when he
did not get the results from that guru….he did not left the path of truth….he
left the guru!!
How
our Normal Invetors Bhave?
Normal
guy comes to the market for super normal returns……when he books losses in the
first attempt or 1st year…. he concludes share market is not good
for him….so he goes back to his Bank FD/ Insurance/ Mutual Funds etc.
They
do not have the passion to be successful in stock investments……so, they move
from one extreme to another. In doing this……they always remain on the middle
path!! I am seeing the investors who left in 2008……are coming back again!! I am
sure they will go back again!
Buddha said….you chose one extreme and remain balanced over there……these guys move between two extreme and remain on the middle path!!
