Who are you - Student of the Market or Disciple of the Market? Your choice will decide your success.

Dear Fellow Travelers,

Namaste! Our last post on Apple was appreciated by all success-minded readers. In the long journey of about 30 years – I have realized the real truth of the market and I have observed the same in other successful investors also. I have divided all the investors into two broad categories. Students of the Market V/s. Disciples of the Market. Read and find out where do you stand.

Student V/s. Disciple: -

He selects the line which has the best potential for career.

While selecting the education line – most parents and students try to find out the education line which has the best potential from a future point of view. Most parents will pay heavy donations to get the seat in a particular line of education. Many times, students also commit suicide for not getting admission in a particular line.

When this student kind of investors comes to the market – they want SURE SHOT CALLS or CALLS which can make the best money for them in the shortest possible time.

A disciple is focused on selecting the proper GURU. His goal is not the best line or the best money. His goal is selecting the proper GURU. Once he gets the GURU – he gets the best line and best money by default.

When this kind of investor comes to the market – they focus on the Market and not on any fast-moving TIPs. When they focus on the market – they get all the best and worst investment ideas by just looking at the screen.

He studies particular courses in some systematic pattern.

The student learns their particular course say MBA in a particular pattern only. They have a fixed pattern of learning a course and fixed books and everything is known to them before the course starts.

When this kind of investors comes to the market – they want to control the outcome. They believe that an expert is one who knows everything and who can pinpoint to them exactly what will happen next.

Disciple surrenders to the Guru. Guru decides his course and the way to teach that course to him. Nothing is fixed for him.

When this kind of investor comes to the market – the market is their Guru and they just follow what Guru says. They have no choice and they have no particular notions of right or wrong.

He goes for options while going for the exam.

This is the funniest aspect. The student prepares the subject from an exam point of view and not from the Subject point of view. Say he has options to answer 5 out of 10 questions in the final exam – he will select only 5 chapters out of 10 chapters and try to mug them.

When this kind of investor comes to the market, they want only fast-moving ideas. Some want to play only in equities. Some want to play only in Futures. Some want to buy first and sell. Some want to sell first and buy. Some want to hold for the long term. Some want to do day trading. Some want only Commodities. I am sure you would have observed the above kind of biases and dogmas.

Disciple has no choice from the beginning. Guru’s word is final. He will study all whatever his Guru asks him to. He is open-minded and full of faith in Guru.

When these kinds of investors come to the market – they have no particular trading dogmas or biases. They will go will the market. Whatever the market offers to them – they will do. They are PRESENT oriented and not Future-Oriented.

He wants to earn the maximum after he completes the exam.

The student judges his studies by the salary or income he generates from his education. More the income, more the appreciation, and vice versa.

When this kind of investors comes to the market – their goal is only to make money. So, they will buy all kind of companies which promises them a fast return. They don’t worry about company management or business background or products. This leads to a lot of stress in their life.

A disciple has got the right Guru and he has surrendered to him. Now, he is not worried about FAST or SLOW / MORE or LESS income. He knows whatever happens to him due to Guru Kripa will be the best. If the losses are best for him – Market will give him losses. If the profits are best for him - Market will give him profits.  He is choiceless. He is always Stress-Free.

He has very strong likes and dislikes about the other areas of study or students.

Medical students may not like MBA Student and MBA student may not like Engineering Student and so on and on. This is common. Another trait of a student is that he will judge the Guru based on how many ideas of Guru matches with his ideas.

When this kind of investor comes to the market, they will have their chosen counters. Say A group shares or Mid-Caps or Small Caps. He will focus only on those shares. If somebody is mad after Reliance– he will not like the person who recommends SELL in reliance or the person who talks about Bombay Dyeing.

Disciple has no choice. He will focus on Guru i.e. Market. Whatever market tells him – he will do without bringing his ego in between. He does not blame the Guru for losses. He looks within to find out where he went wrong so he incurred the losses. He always judges himself when compared with Guru. For him, Guru is always right.

What NEXT?

I don’t know anything about you. But I can tell you for sure – if you have more characteristics of a Student while investing in the market – your success will be full of stress. Your life will also be full of stress.

When you have more characteristics of Disciple, whatever you have will be more than enough. You will always be full of gratitude for whatever is given to you.

Just remember - Student is LOGIC and Disciple is FAITH. Faith has always won without trying to win in the thousands of centuries in the past.

Make your choice for 2021. I wish you all the best.
