4Ds of Success in Investments and Life - Desire, Decision, Determination, and Decades

Namaste! As usual, our post on Gold was the most read and forwarded yesterday. It’s not loving towards me but love towards gold that attracts people to read my post on Gold. Of course, they appreciate our accuracy. Reading my post – I keep on receiving requests for investments and personalized guidance. I have observed the following 4 things on the people who are enquiring.

Desire: - Looking at the market up move – many new investors / small investors also aspire to invest in stocks to make some fast money. These people are really nice people in social terms – they make everybody happy by investing some amount in all the areas – Small Savings / MF / Stocks / PPF and things like that. They feel happy that they have not left anything worth doing. It is common to find 50-200 shares in a portfolio of Rs.2 lakhs to Rs.5 lakhs with such people.

They are full of desire to make money but when they come to know about the PAIN terms of learning to invest and spending the time and money to master it – their desire gets evaporated.

These people don’t reach anywhere in life in terms of money. They are generally full of complaints towards society at the end of their life.

Decision: - These kinds of people have a clear purpose to invest. They know what they want out of investing and also, they are ready to do what it takes to do. They will pick up only those stocks which will help them to achieve their purpose.

The problem with this kind of people is - the decision is also a Mind Game. So, when they are given other options with solid logic – they get carried away by other ideas and they change their focus.

They have a good start but they fizzle out in the mid-way. I have worked with this kind of people the most. Normally, I ask this kind of client to be with me for 3 years minimum – but they change the mind by the end of the year. They also don’t reach very far in terms of money from investments in their life.

Determination: - When decision + passion join hands it becomes determination. Here the attitude is either “I will reach my goal or I will kill myself”. Hit out or get out. These are high-energy people. They want success at any cost. They will go out of the way to do what they need to do to achieve their goals. Working with this kind of people is always fun as they are 100% focused and they are ready to take all the pains in terms of time and money cost.

They generally get really good success in a short time. But when they get emotional setbacks in their life – they get diverted easily. They forget about their goals and become anti-goals. I have seen this kind of people going the opposite way with equal passion.

Out of the above 3 – Determination is good. But not the best.

Thinking in terms of Decades: -

Everybody wants success, happiness, and wealth. But when it comes to thinking in terms of Decades – they simply can’t visualize. They don’t want to think very long term. This is the reason it becomes very difficult for any insurance advisor who is trying to plan for the retirement of a client. People are just not ready to think that they will get Old / will have no earned income someday / can get sick or can die an early death.

Buffett has always said – “It’s my sitting which has made tons of money for me and not stock selecting.” When he bought Burlington Northern Santa Fe in 2009, he had a visualization of 2050. He will not be there for sure in 2050. But he planned his investments with a scenario in 2050 in mind. This guy at 90 planning an investment for 130 years of age. I see people at 40 are not ready to think for age 60 and beyond.

Thinking in terms of decade needs – Determination + Trust (SHRADDHA is the actual word in Indian parlance).  He has invincible SHRADDHA in the ability of the USA to come back or bounce back over a period of time.

When you operate out of SHRADDHA – you are doing your best and leaving the results to existence. 99.9999% of the people are not fitting in this quality. That’s why we have very few people like Buffett, on earth.

What NEXT?

Desire is very casual. The decision is a little better. Determination is good. But Determination + Shraddha is the best and ultimate formula for success in life and investments.
