Are you an Investor with HAVE NOT back-ground  or HAVE Background?

Dear Fellow Investors,

Namaste! Last Saturday we shared a story to make readers think about their PERSONALITY. The character in the story was GAMBLER to the core and he made the money thanks to his die hard gambling skills.

Today we are taking the learning to the next phase. Over the last 30 years I have seen only two kinds of investors – investors who invest to make money and investors who invest because they have money. In short – HAVE NOT INVESTORS and HAVE INVESTORS.

Let me share a story of AKBAR and TANSEN: -

Akbar was very much impressed with TANSEN’s Music. He could not think that there could be a better musician than TANSEN. So, he said to TANSEN - “I don’t think there would be anybody who could play better music than you”. TANSEN was honest and he said I am nobody in front of my GURU.

Akbar said please call him and let us listen to his music. TANSEN said he would not come. If you want to listen, we will have to go to his place to listen. Moreover, he would not play at our convenience. He will play only if he has a mood to play. So, Akbar agreed to go to HARIDAS place.

HARIDAS was staying in a HUT near GANGA. He was playing early in the morning at around 3 am. Akbar and TANSEN went to his hut and hid on the backside of the HUT to listen to the MUSIC.

From the beginning till the end AKBAR’s was lost in the music. His eyes were filled with tears of joy. When they reached the PALACE, AKBAR asked TANSEN – you were right. Your skills are nothing in front of your GURU. How come you are not able to play as well as your GURU?

TANSEN Replied – “He is playing because he has got something. I am playing because I want to get something. He is playing for the LORD of the UNIVERSE. I am playing for the KING of India”

Have Not and HAVE

The most common question for investors before investing is to ask – how much return he will earn? Say they want to earn 20% per annum. So, they will try to find investment ideas which will generate those kinds of returns.

90% of the guys will get ready to invest only and only if they are going to get some return. More the return, the more the motivation for them to invest. (This attitude opens up the place for tons of Manipulators).

In the process, they will focus more on 20% than 100% of the capital they have. Subconsciously, it means that 20% extra, they may earn on their capital in the future, is more important to them, than 100% they have got in their hand today. (READ THIS TWICE).

They don’t appreciate the 100% they have but they will feel happy only if they have added that little 20% at the end of the year.

(Last week – we shared the story of our mentor asking me to buy an iPhone first and invest the balance. Rather than investing and waiting for the profit to buy the mobile. He taught me to focus on the 100% I have first rather than Rs.50000 for the Mobile).

The problem for HAVE NOT investors is they keep on setting up one target after another. In the process – they don’t have time to enjoy the fruits of their efforts. Say you made 20% in the first year – now you are investing them back and set another target for 20%. So, you got 20% in the first year but you didn’t enjoy the same. This cycle becomes so repetitive that they end up with tons of money without enjoying a major part of the same. They become the HOARDERS of the money.

The way TANSEN was the PUPPET of AKBAR, normal investors become the puppet of market manipulators due to their expectations and desires to make fast money. MEDIA is full of news of investors who have lost their capital in Money DOUBLE SCHEMES.

What was TANSEN GURU HARIDAS doing?

He was playing music out of JOY. He had nothing to gain by playing the music. His Music was the expression of inner joy. When he was getting joy from the beginning, his 100% focus was on singing.

Same way BUFFETT invests in the businesses he likes. His best return is to invest in those companies. Once he likes the businesses, he gets deep into it and the businesses reveal the hidden money-making opportunities to him or hidden threats to his capital.

Lord Krishna has assured us that all our KARMA’s will be rewarded, irrespective of our desire for reward or no desire for reward. When KARMA’s are done without expectations – all our energy goes into the performance of KARMA in the best way. When you are focused 100% on doing your KARMA (investments) you will focus more on your CAPITAL i.e. what you have. And when you focus on what you have, by default you will make the best investments.

What Next?

Nobody is smarter than MARKET or GOD or NATURE or EXISTENCE. You can use any name. The only way to outsmart the market is to surrender to the market by investing in businesses you really like and the market will give you the best at its own time.
