Why the Best of the Research Reports are SILENT about the most important aspect of The company they write about?

Dear Fellow Travelers,

Namaste! Today is Friday and we are due for the weekend now. Today, I want to share the ANOMALY in the best of the corporate research reports. I have seen research reports talking about industry/world scenario/company in detail / their products and services / their competitors' positions / Valuations of the company. They mostly use 20-50 pages per report with various CHARTS and ANALYSIS.

The underlying assumption is – if the company has good products/services if the product and services have good market potential going forward if the past track record is good and fairly valued against competitors then it is a GOOD BUY. I know most of the guys will feel that this is logical and this is the best way to analyze the company. Most of the Fund Houses have this kind of report only. Most of the SELL SIDE ANALYSTS prepare this kind of reports for their brokerage clients and high net worth individuals.

The funny thing is Wall Street to Dalal Street – all have followed the above model in their research reports. It is an accepted NORMS in the market. When all are doing the same thing - NORMAL minds do not question the validity of these kinds of practices.

How Warren Buffett is Different?

Business potential is a very important thing. But how come all the companies having great business potential are not making super profits or showing super results. E.g.  How come out of all mobile manufactures – APPLE makes the most profit? How come out of all the mobile service providers in India – JIO is making the best profit? How come Samsung is holding 20% world market share in Television since 2006? You can add many such examples.

Success is Inside-out Phenomenon. Normal research reports do not talk about the people running the business in detail.

If I am reading XYZ company reports – it would be very important for me to know about top guys of that company.

 

1.    How he thinks and behaves in his office?

2.    How is his daily schedule?

3.    How many hours in a week he attends the office?

4.    How easily he is available to his people?

5.    How is his public life?  

6.    How alert he is about his health and relationships?

7.    How much time he spends with his family members?

8.    Is he married and having a good family life or having a multiple relationships?

9.    Is he gifting a 20 Carat Solitaire to Miss Universe in spite of having a wife at home?

10.                  Is he seen moving around with Film Personalities instead of Business Personalities belonging to his industry?

11.                  Is he involved in DRUGS or other activities?

12.                  How is his educational background?

13.                  How are his leadership qualities and how his staff thinks about him?

The above are some random questions. You can add more to them. We are dealing with PUBLIC limited companies. They have taken money from PUBLIC to run their companies. I am sure they should be willing to share the above details to the public so that the public can take qualitative decisions along with quantitative decisions.

Buffett has all the personal details of the top guys before he invests or takes over the company. That is the reason – he can afford to let them drive the company without his interference.   

Buffett has the full knowledge of the business and the person who runs the business. This is the reason he is super successful.

What Next?

I give more importance of Qualitative factors than Quantitative factors. Wall Street and Dalal Street are famous for cooking the numbers and taking the investors for a ride. From my side, I take all the care to guide my clients.
